Welcome to my Blog!

Welcome to my blog! I am glad you have found your way here!

I am writing this blog because I want to help people see the opportunity that is sometimes buried deep within adversity. Life got extremely hard for me the day a Chevy Cavalier pulled out in front of my wife and I as we rode our Honda 750 down the highway on a sunny Spring day in April of 2011. The crash radically altered my life and launched me onto a long journey of recovery that has been both a test and a time of growth and learning.

One word I thought of to describe this journey was “OpporVersity” which I define as: “the marriage between opportunity and adversity.” Instead of trying to get out of my adversity, I’ve been learning to dance with it and see what shows up which explains the words that describe this blog as “hoping for the best and dancing with the rest.” In other words, when you have hope and can find a way to dance with hard circumstances, you can live!

As I write, I welcome your involvement in the conversation. Topics will be practical and relevant for anyone going through challenging circumstances either now, in the past or in your future (and they will come!). I want to give you fresh ways to look at life that will encourage and challenge you to grow deeper as you face a variety of challenges.

I invite your comments, questions and insights into the topics I’ll write about.  Please sign up to receive my blog posts as an email or a RSS feed so you can stay current on these ideas.

This is a work in process. I’ll be learning as I go both about the topic at hand as well as what makes a blog a successful one. Thanks for learning with me.

Great words of living wisdom, how do you train yourself to have the disipline to confront the most brutual facts of your current reality ? ( The Stockdale Paradox) Is this something that comes easier to others by way genetics or parenting ?

    1. Good question Mark. One thing that has been true for me is that I studied the behaviors of guys like Jim Stockdale during peaceful times in my life which I think prepared me for times of greater adversity.

It’s part of developing a mindset that prepares you for the harsh times of life. I’m a natural optimist so I’ve had to learn to honest with my brutal facts – maybe that points to the ability to become more self aware which is learned as well. I do think it’s true that our parents and other role models have contributed to how we live now but the beauty is we have the power to choose differently (if necessary).

Those are a few random thoughts – I look forward to the ongoing conversation on this topic.

Let me say first, Cam that I am your #1 fan! You inspire me with your optimistic spirit. Unfortunately, you didn’t get that from me! But I have always been happy for it in you – a trait which was apparent from a young child. The way you have handled this whole experience is amazing! I like the word OpporVersity. It is so much about choice, how we handle obstacles in our path. This is my first response to a blog. I will look forward to future entries.

  3. Thanks Mom for your post and being a fan! (Maybe there’s a reason for my optimism right there!). When I read your post, I thought of the optimism of people like my Grandfather and other family members which I know has rubbed off on me. So maybe it’s less “nature” but definitely “nuture” that builds into our lives an optimistic attitude and hopefullness about the future.
