Where Would You Rather Be?

Check out my new book, Detour: A Roadmap For When Life Gets Rerouted, which came out last week! It’s packed full of practical help and inspiration to help you survive and thrive the storms of life.

A hitchhiker’s sign read: “Anywhere but here!” When I saw it, I couldn’t help but wonder, “What are they trying to get away from?”

Have you ever been in the shoes of that hitchhiker? Holding up the sign in your mind? I certainly have.

Anywhere but here

You hold up the “anywhere but here” sign when you find yourself experiencing…

Pain
Loss
Envy
Discontent
Impatience
Anxiety
Stress
Conflict
Comparison

When I lost so many of the things that were dear to me in a motorcycle accident, I found myself wishing I could escape the pain and suffering. I couldn’t, however, but thankfully found a way through. I kept track of that journey and what I learned and want to share it with you in my brand new book, Detour.

Be fully present where you are

If you try to out run your problems, they eventually catch up to you. You can escape for a while, but it won’t last.  You end up running right back into the pain and frustration you had before and are back holding up your well worn sign.

The alternative is to practice behaviors that help you stay grounded and get through adversity and unwanted circumstances. A few of the ways you do that include the following:

  • embrace the experience you are currently in
  • get in touch with the full range of emotions you are feeling
  • turn up the awareness radar and notice what’s going on around you
  • journal your thoughts and feelings as a way to process your experience
  • ask God (if you are a person of faith) to lead you through the experience

You are most alive when you allow yourself to be fully present with life as it presents itself “right now.” It may not be pleasant or enjoyable in the moment, but in time you will find yourself settling down, finding hope, and growing into a more mature person.

Let me end with some wisdom from Dr. Seuss.

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.

Where are you standing right now? Are you wishing you were somewhere else or learning to find life right where you are?
